Disparity

Observed a strange little thing at a career fair today. As always, the Big Two - Microsoft and Google were there, but the thing that stood out was the number of the people waiting in line just to get a chance to drop off their resumes at Microsoft and the relatively deserted booth for Google! People could almost just walk up to the guys from Google and have a chat. To me, it could mean two things. It could show the extent of Microsoft's brand clout, not just over the software market, but over the psyche of people. Or is it more the case that people think they have a better chance of landing up a job at Microsoft given the famously tough interview process at Google?

Considering the size difference, there are obviously a lot more opportunities available, that consequently draw the crowd ;-)

I second Vivek's opinion. Microsoft has turned a behemoth in its 30 years since inception and they have opportunities in almost all the sectors that you can think of within this industry. You say OS, Office, telecom, healthcare, services, product dev, evangelism, sales, advertising, search, retail, public sector, mobility (phew) ... anything that you can possibly point your finger on.
Thats very much contrary to Google who have a comparatively miniscule presence (if any) in any of the other sectors apart from search and advertising.
And of course, there have been stories about the tough Microsoft interviews as well. But then things do get routine pretty quickly and soon people do not discuss routine things. The very next thing everybody is talking about - the tough interviews by Google :)
